About: Wolcott Balestier's first published work was a novelette entitled "A Patent Philter," which was published serially in the New York Tribune in 1884. He wrote two more novelettes that year, and in 1886 he published the novel, A Victorious Defeat.
In 1892, Balestier collaborated with Rudyard Kipling, on the book The Naulahka, the story of a Californian in India.
Balestier died of typhoid fever in 1891. That same year, Kipling married Balestier's sister, Carrie.
